WHAT'S IN A NAME?
April 22, 2005. 9:19 AM

I think I've decided on a name for my houseboat: Archimedean. From a historical standpoint, Archimedes discovered the principles and theories behind why a boat floats. So in essence, he's the reason I have a job. The word Archimedean is just an adjective used to describe anything discovered by him, such as the Archimedean Screw: a device used to bring irrigation to crops, and the inspiration for modern water pumps. The other boat names I considered were Wavemaker, Dauntless, Soggy Bottom, Adventure Galley, D Sea, and Starlight Express. I even thought about doing an anagram of 'houseboat' such as "Sea Hub Too", "Taboo Hues", "Utah Oboes", "Boo The USA", or "Saute Hobo". Of course, none of them really make any sense. Some of the funnier suggestions I got were Sea Duck (from Tail Spin), The Watergate, Distelfink, and After You ("I named my boat after you").

I'm headed to Blacksburg tonight for the big Wesley Weekend celebration! Hope to see everyone there.

It appears that I made the purchase of my houseboat just in time! Because now, thanks to an article in today's Washington Post, all of DC knows about how affordable and convenient living aboard a boat can be. Which of you tipped them off? Did someone at the Post read my website last week?

How about another giant rougue wave taking a swipe at a cruise ship yesterday?

Any suggestions for what I should name my houseboat?

HAD TO FLOAT A LOAN FOR THIS ONE
April 11, 2005. 10:09 PM

I bought a new home. Starting next month I'll be a resident of the District of Columbia, living on board a houseboat at the DC waterfront. I'll spare you the boring details, but basically I will own this boat as soon as it passes an inspection and gets documented. And I couldn't be happier. Check out the pictures below, more to come soon:

CHERRY BLOSSOMS
April 10, 2005. 10:30 AM

The most popular annual event in Washington DC doesn't involve fireworks, a sports team, politics, or protesting. In fact, it involves flowers. The cherry trees that surround the tidal basin are in bloom during the first weeks of April, and their brilliant white flowers attract crowds and inspire parades and festivals all throughout the month. The flowers last only a few weeks, and somehow the best weekend to see them also had the best weather you could ask for. Some friends and I followed the mobs of confused tourists into the city yesterday to see the trees (a gift from Japan) and wander around the city. Some photos below:

LA JOCONDE A UNE NOUVELLE SALLE
April 6, 2005. 5:14 PM

Today, just seven weeks after Daryl and I took our trip to the Louvre, the world's largest art museum unveiled its brand-new, state of the "art" (har har) viewing room for the Mona Lisa. The new room makes access easier for large crowds, increases the light on the painting, and integrates hidden lamps that match the exact colors of sunlight. The world's most recognized piece of artwork now hangs alone in its new 6.2 million dollar home, still inspiring thousands of people a day to gawk "it's so SMALL!"
