THE BEST PICTURE EVER. BY BRET SALMONS.
March 23, 2006. 9:05 PM

Bret drew a background picture for my new computer. He called it his masterpiece, his his magnum opus, his chef d'oeuvre, the feather in his cap, his crowning achievement. Gaze in awe, but do not touch: bestpictureever.jpg

NEW SKINS, NEW STADIUM
March 17, 2006. 11:25 AM

Big news this week in DC sports. The Redskins, the DC football team, signed a bunch of expensive veterans to next season's squad, making it clear now that last year's "rebuilding year" really was a strategy planned by Dan Snyder and Joe Gibbs. This coming season will be exciting to follow. The other big change came this week for the year-old Nationals, who play baseball at the old RFK stadium a few blocks from my apartment. The DC council approved a deal with Major League Baseball, who owns the team, to build a shiny new stadium a few blocks the other way from my apartment. The Post reports on the new stadium, which looks quite nice, and should be a good replacement for the boarded-up warehouses and gravel factories that sit on the site near the Navy Yard in Southeast. There was some controversy over the design because most of the people in favor of that site wanted the stadium to have a view of the Capitol dome, until the baseball players stepped in and said that couldn't happed because it would mean that the sun would be in a batter's eyes during an evening game in the summer. And so they turned it ninety degrees, so now half of the seats look over the Capitol, and the other half over the murky Anacostia River. I like the new design, and it will help to turn that part of the city around. I just wonder why they can't use some of the $400-million to help the ailing DC schools. Shame.

TICKET ADVENTURES
March 12, 2006. 9:25 PM

Its been fun. Saturday morning I stood in line with Bret, Steve, and Josh to get Jimmy Buffett tickets. We were only there for about an hour or so, standing in front of rude guy, and it turned out that Bret and Steve were the last two to get tickets. The catch is that we wanted maybe sixteen tickets and we got, um, four. I would say that Ticketmaster should reconsider their options for selling tickets, but I honestly can't come up with anything better. Maybe they should stop letting all the "ticket brokers" buy their hundred-packs of tickets before the rest of the public. Or maybe Nissan Pavillion should expand to the size of a NASCAR arena, complete with RV parking and 150,000 seats. And a twelve lane highway in and out of the parking lot.

NEW DIGS
March 5, 2006. 2:25 PM

You may notice some changes to this blog. I made a new blog banner, background, and I made the picture page so the newest pictures are at the top instead of the bottom. Hope this helps you navigate and makes your friends ooh and aah when you show them my website. Thanks for stopping by and catching up after my few months off. I have made this page a bit more DC, since I am now a resident of the beautiful and historic neighborhood of Capitol Hill. If you who don't know, Capitol Hill is much more than just the seat of our government, it is also a great neighborhood that has developed a small town feel in the big city over the past two centuries. I moved off the boat in January because I came across this apartment and decided it is too good to pass up. I'm still trying to find a buyer for the houseboat, so that process takes up most of my weekends and some weeknights as well. I recently cashed in my tax return and bought a nice new computer, a Dell laptop with twice the memory and speed of my old desktop. Computers keep evolving, I have to admit it was a hard decision between this and a Mac Mini. I stuck with Windows.

I'll leave you with a quick story. On my way to the roller rink in Manassass yesterday (yes, you read that right), I stopped behind a Pontiac Aztec with the following spelled out in decals on the rear window: "Live like you we're dying". Let's review: yes, this is the title of a Tim McGraw hit title track from 2004, and not a bad song at that. Nonetheless, grammar fans, you mixed your tenses up, meaning it should really say "Live like you ARE dying". Next, the word "we're" is a contraction for "we are", meaning your car says "Live like you we are dying". Lastly, a Pontiac Aztec? Geez, man.
